Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is the science of analyzing behavior and responding appropriately to minimize unwanted behaviors while increasing desirable behaviors. Teaching concepts and skills are then taught in a structured and organized method. It has been studied for over 30 years and is the only evidenced based intensive behavioral treatment for autism at this time. The US Surgeon General, the National Academy of Sciences and The National Research Council all state that in order for autistic children to have the best chance at success, they should receive between 30-40 hours a week of intensive behavior therapy.

Some studies backing up the effectiveness of Applied Behavior Analysis:
Further Research:
Studies show that providing less than the recommended hours per week (below 20 hours) is ineffective for this population. (Eldevik, Sigmund, Eikeseth, Svein, Jahr, Erik Smith, Tristan, Effects of Low Intensity Behavioral Treatment for Children With Autism and Mental Retardation, 2001)
Treatment is more effective in a 1:1 environment compared to a 2:1 teaching environment.
(Graff, Richard, Green, Gina, Libby, Myrna, Behavioral Interventions, Vol.13, 21-41 1998.)
Treatment in an eclectic treatment model, in comparison to intensive behavioral analytic treatment is ineffective.
(Howard, Jane, Sparkman, Coleen, Cohen, Howard, Green, Gina, Stanislaw, Harold, Research Developmental Disabilities, 26, 359-383, 2005. Eikeseth, Svein, Smith Tristan, Jahr, Erik, Eldevik, Sigmund, Behavior Modification, Vol.26, No. 1, 49-68, 2002)
Early age intervention and positive outcome results within 3-5 years of treatment.
(Fenske, Edward, Zalenski, Stanley, Krantz, Patricia, McClannahan, Lynne, Princeton Child Development Institute, Intervention on Developmental Disabilities, Vol. 5, 49-58, 1985 and Green, Gina, Brennan, Lynn, Fein, Deborah, Behavior Modification, Vol.. 26, No.1, 69-102, 2002).
Fully funding treatment saves money for autistic population.
(Jacobson, John, Mulick, James, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Vol. 30, No. 6585-593, 2000 and Stern, Barry, Detroit News, Fighting Autism Epidemic Will Pay Off, July 2006).
Treatment gains maintained after intensive treatment.
(McEachin, John, Smith, Tristan, Lovaas, Ivar, American Journal on Mental Retardation, Vol. 97, No. 4, 359-372, 1993).
